NxTracker, positioning and sustainability: the future of Smart Building according to Nextome
As we move our steps forward in innovation and technological advancement, we had the chance to discuss with Pietro Boccadoro, R&D Software Engineer at Nextome. Through this interview, we seek to understand Nextome's contributions to technology and its commitment to shaping a sustainable future through cutting-edge solutions.

Today we tell you about a project that is not just technology and knowledge, but a look towards the future of shared and intelligent working environments, productivity, sustainability, and smart use of technologies. This possible future exists thanks to the integration into operational scenarios, such as buildings for office or shared use. Various strategic advantages can be obtained from this integration. The story we tell you today concerns intuitions, innovation, experimentation, audacity, and collaboration. The vision is that of Nextome.

Pietro, thank you for joining us today. Could you start by giving us an overview of the NXtracker project and its objectives?

Hi everyone, thank you very much for your time. It’s an honour for me. NXtracker is an exciting project carried out by two players: Nextome and Idea75. The partnership aimed at revolutionizing the way energy consumption is optimized (minimized, ndr) in the context of public buildings through advanced positioning technologies. Our main goal is to provide precise positioning data to create an energy optimization web portal, helping businesses and individuals make informed decisions to minimize waste and maximize efficiency in indoor environments

That sounds fascinating. Could you delve into the scope of the project and some of the key techniques you're employing?

Absolutely. NXtracker encompasses a multifaceted approach. Firstly, we're utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI), and genetic algorithms in particular, to automate the release process of sensor nodes indoors, which not only streamlines deployment but also enhances scalability. Those sensors are the first and probably most important part of the system. Once signals are over the air, they are captured by dedicated devices or a mobile application, to inform about the presence, the position and the tag tracking procedure towards the destination. Additionally, we're implementing dedicated signal filtering techniques to refine positioning data, ensuring accuracy and reliability. Our experiments on Angle of Arrival (AoA) setups and hybrid asset tracking further push the boundaries of indoor positioning systems, culminating in filed patents and scientific contributions. Once gathered, data are processed by dedicated AI solutions, relying on dedicated routines and algorithms, to elaborate sophisticated analysis of data: On top of those elaborations, the system helps human operators to make informed decisions and promptly react to relevant situations

It's impressive to see such a comprehensive approach. Can you share any notable outcomes or impacts of the NXtracker project?

Certainly. One of the most significant outcomes is the advancement in energy optimization capabilities. By providing precise positioning data, NXtracker empowers users to optimize energy consumption in various settings. For building owners, this implies lowering the energy footprint by optimizing lighting, and heat and ventilation control systems. Additionally, our filed patents and scientific contributions highlight the project's contributions to technological innovation and academic discourse, further cementing its impact in the field.

Looking ahead, what do you envision for the future of NXtracker and its implications?

We aim to continue refining and expanding the capabilities of the NXtracker project. Our ultimate vision is to witness the widespread adoption of our positioning technologies across verticals, from energy optimization in commercial buildings to logistics and asset management. By driving positive change through innovation and collaboration, NXtracker is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping a more sustainable future

Thank you, Pietro, for sharing insights into the NXtracker project. It's been a pleasure speaking with you.

Since we are about to leave, if you don’t mind, let me greet and thank once again the colleagues I had the pleasure to work with during the project activities: Domenico Colucci (Project Manager), Giangiuseppe Tateo (Product Owner), Vincenzo Dentamaro (Project owner), Laura Notarangelo (Software Engineer), Paolo Rotolo (Developer), Anna Labellarte (Developer), and Letizia Guglielmi (Designer). Thank you for the opportunity to discuss this exciting endeavour. See you next time.
